Peace in Kolob

This image of a wheat field in mid-spring on the Kolob Plateau of southern Utah was made on legacy 4x5 color transparency film. Imagine the sense of peace at sunset when not a breath of wind stirred the delicate stalks. Meanwhile the camera shutter whirred away at f/64 for 3 seconds - I love that sound. To a large format photographer, having worked at setting up a folding wooden field camera, reading a light meter, making all the adjustments while viewing the image upside down and backwards on ground glass, that whirring shutter sound itself is the satisfying reward for all the labor and patience. Digital is the new king, but oh how sweet the days of film were when rich colors of a scene like this could be found and created on 4-inch by 5-inch film masters.
