Antelope Canyon

23 images Created 16 Feb 2015

These slot canyons on Navajo land are truly magical, even though it means contending with a few hundred fellow tourists. Just keep looking up instead of left or right; up is why we came here in the first place.

  • With no intentions of offense to any native American tribes, this is a mixed metaphor (of two destinations) made during one of my trips to Antelope Canyon in Arizona. I made my first trip there in 1989 when nearly all images of the place were made on black and white film due to the long exposures required. Color film had such limited dynamic range in those days, making it nearly impossible to get an image like this. Digital changed everything. Including encouraging the public to visit the place by the hundreds of thousands. On my first trip, we were a group of 8 photographers with no escort and no other visitors for the entire time we were there.
